HOW WAS 'SATISFY THIS ITCH' MADE?

Hello hello, today I will be telling you wonderful people just how ‘Satisfy This Itch’ came to be!

‘Satisfy This Itch’ is one of two pre-album singles - the second of which is dropping 10th March 2023 (exciting, I know).
The track is inspired from my own experiences coming out and realising I am queer. ‘Satisfy This Itch’ is not only the title, but also embracing the realisation, acceptance and pride in ones own orientation/preferences. It originally began as a solo project, until I played it to my good friend Angus, who this track ended up being in collaboration with. In just two sessions, Angus and I had managed to get the track to what is it you listen to today - our aim of achieving the ‘weirdest’ sound we could. But what about HOW those sounds were created? WHY is there a siren? WHY is there a dog barking? In the following blog I will take you through the vocals, synths and samples.
VOCALS:
The vocals feature a mix of clean, crisp vocals and harmonies - mixed using a ‘Speaking Voice Improve’ Channel EQ, Studio FET Compressor, ‘Dream Hall’ Space Design and a DeEsser. In the chorus, however, this changes to gritty vocals which are created through using a ‘Phone Filter Notch’ Channel EQ, Studio FET Compressor, ‘Modern Classic’ Guitar Amp and a DeEsser. Now you might be wondering ‘a guitar amp? On vocals?’ And yes, I get it - but in all honesty it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE, I find it provides a distortion only commonly found in instruments.
SYNTHS AND SAMPLES:
The synths you can hear are a 90s Stereo Synth Bass (+ overdrive and tape delay), Vox Box Lead, Hypersweep (+ delay) and Edgy Synth Bass. These were used to give a nostalgic sound from the early 00s or 90s (with some binural panning for a sense of live space). Now onto my favourite part, the samples! Spot them all: a Police Motorcycle passing, City Traffic, Falling Rain, and a Dog Barking. I’d love to have a backstory about these, but truth be told it’s simply because I wanted to. That’s it really - I believe anything can be made musical - even someone reciting the six times table… it just so happens when I was writing the track I wanted those sounds.
There’s so much more about the track to talk about, but that would end up being pages and pages of me going on a music production tangent about pedals and plug-ins. Be wonky and confusing to your hearts content, life’s too short to worry about what people may think of you or your art.
